Paella Workshop in Pickup Valencia!

Paella Workshop

Last week the students of Pickup Valencia Spanish School had a Paella Workshop in the school. Pickup Valencia organized this Paella Workshop, since the Paella is a very important and traditional dish in Valencia, so our students can´t go home without knowing how to cook a good Valencian Paella!

Paella is a rice dish from Spain that has become very popular and is now known around the world. Originated in the fields of a region called Valencia in eastern Spain. Valencian people prepared the dish with whatever ingredients they had on hand – rabbit, snails and vegetables. Today paella has spread to every region of Spain, using just about any kind of ingredient that goes well with rice! It may contain chicken, pork, shellfish, fish, eel, squid, beans, peas, artichokes or peppers. Saffron, the spice that also turns the rice a wonderful golden color is an essential part of the dish.

First of all, the Spanish cook made a list of ingredients and the students went together with their Spanish teachers to the supermarket close to the school. This way, they could bring some of their knowledge into practice by for example asking in the supermarket for meat, vegetables and so on.

Once finished the buying, we all moved to the kitchen accompanied by our beers and chips 😉 and the cook showed us step by step how to cook the Paella during the Paella Workshop. First baking the chicken and the rabbit for a while (some students were surprised to see the rabbits getting into the paella) and later mixing it with vegetables, water, spices and rice.

At the end we all tried the Paella and everybody loved it and was happy to know now how to cook it by their selves once they are back home. The cook wanted to make sure everybody knows how to make the Paella, so after the Paella Workshop our students got a ´Paella quiz´ which everybody passed!
