Spanish customs – two kisses

Spanish customs

We are sure that if you came to Spain at least once, you have been in that situation where you don’t know if you have to double kiss or shake hands with the person in front of you.

This is one of the most confusing Spanish customs for any foreign people, although it looks so natural for Spanish people.

Different cultures have different customs, a few years ago, Charlotte Lewis and Ayman Najafi went to jail for the two kisses greet in a restaurant in Dubai. – http://www.theguardian.com/world/2010/apr/04/dubai-jails-kissing-britons

Fortunately, even if you don’t get it correctly at the first time, you will have no legal problem here in Spain J

Let’s see how to understand when it’s time you lean towards and kiss the other person.

Spanish customs

Do not kiss situations:

  • Formal situation, job-related situation. When you are at an interview, you are meeting your new boss or your teacher.. Just shake hands, we don’t need more interaction.
  • The first time you meet a much older person, you usually wait for the other to start the kiss if they think it’s necessary, otherwise, shake hands.
  • Between two men that are just acquaintances or they have just met.

Two kisses situations:

  • Between a man a woman friends, between two women friends and between two men friends just If they are family or maybe really old friends.
  • When you introduce yourself to someone you don’t know, always between two women or men or women, but not between men.
  • To greet for any occasion or accomplishment like birthdays, Christmas, graduations.

I hope this can help you a little understanding Spanish customs. Another important thing to mention is that you always start on your left side, differently from Italy for example, where you start on your right side.

Now your turn, what do you do in your country in the situations descripted above? Please leave a comment if you want to tell us, we will be happy to hear it from you.
